Presidential Palace (originally 1895, rebuilt 1919 and 1945)
The Presidential Palace, or Building, was originally built during the Japanese period of occupation (1895-1945) as the official seat of its government for Taiwan. Construction on the structure began in 1912 and was completed in 1919. Damaged in the concluding stages of the Second World War, its initial renovation was concluded in 1945. It became the seat of the Republic of China after 1949 and has served as the Office of the President since that time. There is, incidentally, considerable discussion today about making the large square in front of the Palace a green area梩o replace the large square traditionally used for military parades.
