Dodong Seowon, originally called Ssanggye Seowon, was built at the foot of Biseulsan mountain Hyeonpung in 1568. It was burned by the Japanese during the 1592-98 invasions, but the memorial shrine (image 9) was rebuilt at the present site in 1604. The other structures were added soon after, and the academy was named Dodong Seowon by King Sonjo in 1607. Its layout is typical of most seowon.
