Although just a few kilometers from Daegu's international airport, Otgol village is a world away from the bustling cityscape of modern Daegu. The village sits in a rural area between Mt. Palgong to the north and Geomdeokbong Peak to the east. It is bounded on the west by a mountain ridge and to the south by a forest of zelkova trees and a pond. Surrounded as it is on three sides by mountains with water to the south, the site fits the geomantic ideals of pungsu (Chinese, feng shui). These qualities attracted the attention of Choi Dong-jip, a noted Joseon-era scholar-official, who founded a home here in the early 16th century. This house, established in 1630, came to be known as the Choi Family Clan House and currently enjoys the distinction of being the oldest house in Daegu.
