Suwon is a walled city about an hour's distance from Seoul via subway.  During the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910), the city served as one of five fortresses guarding the approach to Seoul.  In the late 18th century, King Chongjo built an enormous fortress here and intended to move the capital here from Seoul.  The fortress was completed but the move never took place due to the King's death.
