About Kandy
The city of Kandy was the capital of the Kandyan kingdom and the home of Sri Lanka's last king, Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe. From Colombo, Sri Lanka's capital city, it is 115 kilometers away. The kings who ruled here considered it important to have a tooth relic temple nearby as a symbol of their legitimacy. This ancient practice was preserved by the Indian Nayakkar dynasty that ruled Kandy from 1747 until the British abolition of the monarchy in 1815.
