Closeup of the mihrab, the niche in the center of the Western wall (called the qibla).  To the right is the minbar, or pulpit, which consists of a series of steps.  The top step is reserved for Muhammed, the Prophet, so the imam (speaker) stands on the second step and uses the top one as a seat.
