Subway Architecture    other sites in Pyongyang     Pyongyang, North Korea

The Pyongyang subway system is built in the same grand style as those in Moscow.  The cars move between vast stations with cathedral ceilings and walls decorated with huge murals in the Socialist realist style.  The stations are deep, about 150 meters underground, so enormous escalators are needed to ferry passengers to and from the surface.   The stations were built so deep in order to double as bomb shelters in the event of a nuclear attack.
