Freestanding wooden Nio Guardian (Thunderbolt-wielding protective deities) at Nandaimon gate. There is a guardian on each side; this one is Un-gyo [with his mouth closed]. They are each over 26' in height and over 800 years old, and were carved by the sculptor Unkei. [There is a wire screen in front of each to protect them from birds]. This statue is  is made from 3,115 pieces of wood
