Guanyin Temple (built 1800)

Built in 1800 by the Hokkien and Cantonese Chinese communities, this is the oldest temple in Penang. The Goddess Guanyin is regarded as a manifestation of the Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara and is associated strongly with fertility rites. She is also the goddess to whom people pray for mercy in times of distress.

Guan Yin is especially worshipped on the 19th day of the second, sixth, and ninth moons. On these days the temple is crowded with worshippers offering food, flowers, and oil. Devotees burn incense or joss sticks in her honor and seek consolation for various problems.
