Clan Jetties (19th century onward)

Situated along the Pengkalan Weld (Weld Quay) are 6 long jetties projecting southeast into the channel between Penang and the mainland. Each jetty is a small community linking a number of houses on stilts. Originally there were seven jetties but one was removed during the construction of the modern ferry terminal. Historically, each jetty was controlled by a different clan. Six of these were the Lim, Chew, Tan, Yeoh, and Koey clans. The seventh jetty contained an assortment of surnames.
