Sagoedang Gotaek was built between the late 18th to early 19th centuries. It is located in Sanggeumgok-ri village, which primarily consists of Wonju Byeon and Hamyang Bak families. The house is now empty, but the lineage who historically lived here have occupied this location since the time of Byeon Ungnyeong (1518-1586), a great-grandson of Byeon Hui-ri (1435-1505), the progrenitor of the Cheomchugong branch of the Byeon clan.
Perhaps the most unusual feature of the estate is the two-story gatehouse to the east of the house. In traditional Korean residences, it is extremely rare to find two-story outbuildings.
According to GPS readings taken on-site by the author, the site is at 36 41.39953 degrees north, 128 24.72069 degrees east (WGS 84 map datum). Note that most Korean GPS atlases are calibrated based on an older datum (known as the Tokyo datum) so the above cooridinates will be off by a few hundred meters using Korean atlases unless you convert WGS84 coordinates to the Tokyo datum.
