Sin Ikhui House - 신익희 생가 (申翼熙 生家) (19th century onward)

This house was the birthplace of Sin Ikhui (1894-1956), a notable politician in the first half of the twentieth century. The age of this house is not known, but according to records it originally stood about 200 meters downhill from its present location. In 1865, a massive flood destroyed much of the house and it was subsequently reconstructed on its present site.

The form of the house is typical of the Gyeonggi region outside Seoul. The two main buildings of the house, each shaped like an "L", frame a square courtyard space. The wing closest to the entrance is the outer quarters, the domain of men, while the inner quarters (where the women lived) is shielded from view. Behind the house is an elevated yard where several small memorials to Sin Ik-hui now stand.
