Bupyeong Hyanggyo - 부평향교 (富平鄕校), 인천시 (built 18th century)
The first Bupyeong Confucian academy, or Hyanggyo, was destroyed during the Manchu invasion of 1636. The present structures were built some time after the 18th century, and have since been repaired several times. This Hyanggyo is of the typical construction with the Myeongnyundang, and Jaesil educational facilities located in the front, and the Confucian shrines of Daeseongjeon, Dongmu and Seomu to the rear. The lecture hall, Myeongnyundang, has a gabled roof and dormitory, Jaesil, has rectangular pillars. Daeseongjeon, where Confucius and other Chinese sages are enshrined, is a gabled roof structure with double-layer rafters featuring a tilted eave. It is of relatively simple construction compared with those of other Confucian shrine-schools. The front can be easily opened for ritual services. The Dongmu and Seomu shrines at both sides of Daeseongjeon are dedicated to Choe Chiwon and other leading Korean Confucian scholars.
