O Gyu-hwan House - 오규환 가옥 (吳奎煥 家屋)(19th century onward)
The O Gyu-hwan house is the only remaining thatched roof house in Gangneung city. The building is rectangular shaped with a large kitchen on the east end and two bedrooms occupying the two bays to the west. An interior hallway runs in front of the two bedrooms, linking them to the kitchen. At the front of the house is a small wooden veranda facing the front garden and the main gate.
On the far left side of the house is an exhaust chimney for smoke from the kitchen fires. The smoke travels from the fireplaces in the kitchen underneath the floor of the two bedrooms, heating them in the winter months.
The house is still occupied and the elderly owner can be seen in several of the photos conversing with Lee Baek-kyu, a local resident knowledgable in Gangneung's architectural heritage.
Address: 강원 강릉시 임당동 28 (Gangwon-do, Gangwon-si, Imdang-dong, 28).
(Designated City Tangible Cultural Property #80).
Location
The approximate location of the house is 37.756254' N, 128.894061' E (WGS 84 map datum).
