Memorial to Mrs. Yu of the Goheung Clan - 고흥유씨 정려각 및 비 (高興 柳氏 旌閭閣 및 碑) (mid 17th-century onward)

Mrs. Yu (1371-1452), the daughter of the scholar-official Yu Jun, lost her husband at the age of 22. Her parents tried to get her to remarry but she refused. Instead, with her four year-old son in tow, she walked several hundred kilometers from her hometown at Gaegyeong to her parents-in-law's house at Hoedoek (this district of Daejeon). There she raised her only son, Song Yu, who grew to become one of the greatest scholars of his age.

Two hundred and one years later the spirit of her devotion had yet to fade. The central government in Seoul took notice and King Hyojong awarded her family a memorial tablet honoring her as a "filial woman". A 'gak', or protection house, was built here to shelter the tablet. Twelve years later, in 1665, she was further awarded with a 'bi', or monument stele, which was placed inside the gak along with the memorial tablet.

It is unclear if the memorial tablet survives, but the memorial stele can still be seen outside this reconstruction of the gak.
