Eunhaesa Temple - 은해사 (銀海寺) (founded 809, oldest parts 1589 onward)

In the foothills east of Daegu sits Eunhaesa temple. Founded in 809 by Hyechol Kuksa, the National Preceptor of Silla, the temple flourished for many centuries under the name "Haeansa" (tranquil ocean temple). After the devastation of the Imjin war in 1592-98, the temple was transferred here and renamed Eunhaesa. In 1919 it was designated a "great head temple" and now serves as the headquarters of the 10th district of Jogye Buddhism (the dominant Buddhism of Korea). Eight smaller hermitages are attached to the temple, but to reach them is quite a hike.

The temple is actually in Yongcheon City, outside of Daegu, but it is conveniently accessable from Daegu.
