Yean Hyanggyo - 예안향교 (禮安鄕校) (extensively renovated 1601 onward, possibly established much earlier)
A hyanggyo, or Confucian academy, was a state-sponsored institute of Confucian learning that thrived during the Goryeo (918-1392) and Joseon dynasties (1392-1910). Generally, a hyanggyo was maintained in every county during the Joseon dynasty. Yean hyanggyo was establisted in Yean-gun in the early Joseon period and was extensively repaired in 1601 and 1745.
Typically, a hyanggyo is laid out with the educational facilities toward the front of the site and the shrine facilities behind them. However, Yean Hyanggyo is somewhat unusual in that the lecture hall is located off-center.
Although the hyanggyo is no longer used for educational purposes, the shrine portion of the hyanggyo continues to function. Memorial services for Confucius are held here in the spring and autumn and in the first half of August.
