Meiji Shrine (originally built 1920, rebuilt 1958)

Meiji Shrine honors Emperor Meiji (r. 1868-1912) and his wife, Empress Shoken. During Meiji's lifetime and afterward, the Emperor was venerated as the central figure in Japan's rapid modernization. The shrine was constructed in 1920 by over 100,000 volunteers. It was destroyed during World War II and rebuilt in 1958.
