Takayama Jinya - 高山陣屋 (built 1816 onward)

The Takayama Jinya was one of about sixty regional government offices established during the Edo period. In 1692, the Tokugawa Shogunate assumed direct control over the Hida area to take advantage of its abundant timber resources. Over the next 176 years until the Meiji Restoration, the Shogun dispatched 25 officials who governed the area on behalf of Edo. The present main building was built in 1816. The oldest surviving structure is the rice storehouse which was built in the 1600s. It was at one time used to store bales of rice that were collected as tax revenue from the surrounding province.
