Hase-dera Temple - 長谷寺 (built at least 13th century onward)

Hase-dera Temple is popularly believed to have been founded in the year 736, but relics at the temple (such as the temple bell) only testify to its existence from the 13th century onward. Although the temple enshrines a statue of the Bodhisattva Kannon, the temple is better known for its numerous Jizo statues, which are propitiatory offerings left by parents of stillborn children or aborted fetuses.

An excellent description of the temple may be found at the following external website: http://www.asahi-net.or.jp/~QM9T-KNDU/hasedera.htm

For GPS users: According to the author's GPS, the temple is located at 35 18.74568' N, 139 32.02303' E.
