Bukchondaek was built in 1862, the 13th year of King Cheoljong (r. 1849-1863) by Yu Doseong, a government official. This house is considered to be one of the two finest structures in Bukchon village (the northern half of Hahoe), the other being Yangjindang house. Complete with an inner quarters (anchae), an outer quarters (sarangchae), a servants' quarters (haengnangchae) and an ancestral shrine (sadangchae), it is a model yangban residence.
In the middle of the servants' quarters there is a high gate. The square floor plan is typical of such residences with the outer quarters located in front of the inner quarters with a courtyard between them. Judging from the arrangement, the annex building probably functioned as a guest house. The ancestral shrine has single-tiered rafters and a gabled rooffeatures typical of shrines of that era.
(The house is designated folklore material #84)
