This pavilion was built in the late 19th century by Kim Hyong-jin, a local scholar, on the slopes of Sirubong peak north of Gyeongpodae. It was originally named Maehakcheong "Pavilion of Plum Blossoms and Cranes" because of the plum trees near the pavilion and Kim's love of cranes.  It was renamed Geumnanjeong after it was bought by a member of the local Geumnangye guild and moved to its present location.

(Designated Gangwondo Tangible Cultural Property #5).
