Yong An temple is located at the southern foot of White Pagoda mountain in Beihai park, north of the Forbidden City. Originally named the "White Pagoda Temple", it was built in 1651 by Fu Lin and Shi Zu at the request of the Tibetan Lama Nao Mu Han. In the 6th year of the reign of Emperor Qianlong (1741) the name of the temple was changed to Yong An. It was enlarged in 1743 and again in 1751. Finally, in the 39th year of Qianlong's reign (1774) the emperor personally authored a "Record of the White Pagoda Mountain's Four Sides" which was erected in each pavilion.
Not all of the buildings are original. The site suffered damage during the cultural revolution and during an earthquake.
