The Golden River (foreground) and the Gate of Supreme Harmony,
which in Imperial times led to the Outer Court. The rooms to the
east contained 48 chambers where court genealogies were kept, while those
to the west were law offices and classrooms for the princes. On special
occasions the flanking pavilions were used as passageways for officials
passing through to the next courtyard. Civil officials passed through
the east pavilion, while the military officials and foreigners passed through
the western one.
