The 5-Phoenix Gate, viewed from the south. Formally
known as the Meridian or Wumen Gate, it consists of a U-shaped courtyard
topped by five pavilions. The courtyard covers nearly 10,000 square
meters. The gate has five openings, but only the Emperor was allowed
to use the central gate. An exception was made for the empress
on her wedding day, as well as for the top three successful civil service
exam candidates from each session of the test.
