Coal Hill is an artificial mound north of the Forbidden City, made of the earth excavated for the moat. It is rumored that a hidden coal supply was buried here for the imperial family. More likely, the hill's purpose is to guard the Forbidden city from evil northern spirits, which bring only death and misery according to classic geomancy (Feng Shui). Since this is the highest hill in Beijing, it offers excellent views of the city center. Unfortunately, Beijing is so polluted that smog often interferes.
Because of pollution, it is best to visit only on those rare hazeless days. During our three week trip, there was only one. The park is one of the cheapest to visit, so be prepared to go elbow to elbow with the local crowds at peak times.
