Tae-eung House (19th century onward) other
sites in Andong |
Andong, Korea |
This tile roof house was probably built in the late Joseon dynasty (1392-1910) although the exact date is not known. The layout is similar to the Gailsugok clan house, also found in the same village just a few hundred meters away. This house, like Gailsugok, is noteworthy for its massive attic spaces located above the rear rooms in the courtyard. The largest attics can only be accessed through a small opening in the mother-in-law's room (the anbang), in keeping with the Joseon dynasty tradition of entrusting care of the household to the primary wife.
Due to the attic spaces, the house has an unusually heavy structure and a complicated frame. In addition to the attics, there are ground floor storage closets adjacent to the anbang as well as the gonnonbang (room for the daughter-in-law) located opposite the anbang.
(The house is designated Gyeongsangbuk-do province Important Folklore Material #202)
